Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,
Well, I had my birthday this past weekend... and we had an amazing time with our friends B&K who flew in from the Bay Area... and I got to show them all the sights of Ogden, Utah! We drank at a bunch of breweries in SLC & on 25th Street, Eccles Dinosaur Park, axe throwing, Crystal Hot Springs, Shooting Star Saloon in Huntsville, New World Distillery in Eden, Prairie Schooner Steak House, all kinds of fun stuff!!! That being said... the movies were a little sparse this week... April 27 – Timerider: The Adventures of Lyle Swann (1982) Motocross rider Lyle Swann (Fred Ward) is testing out his bike when he stumbles upon to a secret time travel experiment & sent back to 1877… and now he not only has to figure out where & WHEN he is… but how to get back… and of course, the local cowboy banditos (led by Peter Coyote) want his “iron horse machine” for their bank robbing. He also meets a lovely strong-willed woman (Belinda Bauer) and hijinx ensue. We had seen this back in the early days of the podcast (about 7-8 years ago) and it’s a tight 80 minutes of fun & craziness… and the ending has one of the best kills in cinema as well as one of the most WTF endings ever. Rating – 9/10 – I really enjoyed it again… and Belinda Bauer is a fetching woman April 29 – Idiocracy (2006) Director Mike Judge (Beavis & Butthead, Office Space, etc.) brings you the story of an average man (Luke Wilson) whose part of a government cryogenics experiment gone wrong… and sent 500 years into the future to where everybody has an IQ of 40 or below due to only stupid people breading… and I’ve seen this movie dozens of times now over the past 18 years… and every single time it gets both funnier & sadder to watch how we’ve regressed in barely a generation. Great comedic performances all around, special effects hold up, and about the only thing that doesn’t hold up is the excessive use of the R-word & the other F-word (dozens of times each) but yeah… it’s an absolute comedic classic… but just be sure to have a few tissues handy for the tears. Rating – 10+/10 – It’s a shame that Mike Judge movies don’t get seen or make money until they’re on home release… May 1 – Leviathan (1989) A deep-sea mining crew is only a few hours away from the end of their months-long gig… when some previously unknown contaminant is found… and hijinx ensue. This was the horror version of “The Abyss” (along with several others) of deep-sea 1989 movies (we did a whole month on the podcast about them) but this forgotten one has a pretty stellar cast with Peter Weller, Hector Elizondo, Ernie Hudson, Meg Foster, Daniel Stern & more… but yeah, it gets pretty Cronenberg when things really kick off… but yeah, I enjoy this more than “The Abyss” and just like the eerie feel of the movie… and yeah, check it out! I think we watched it on Max. Rating – 9/10 – There are a few moments of “Wait, wasn’t that over there?” with all the jump cuts but other than that, excellent flick! Have a great week everybody!!!
